Yes, October is officially National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence and supporting survivors. Congress established the month in 1989, building on an effort that began as a “Day of Unity” in 1981 to unite advocates and raise public consciousness about domestic abuse.
Why DVAM is important:
-
Raising Awareness:It provides a unified voice to educate the public on the signs of domestic violence and how to stop it.
-
Supporting Survivors:The month focuses on uplifting the needs, experiences, and voices of survivors, and creating safe spaces for them.
-
Preventing Abuse:It’s a time to promote healing, center survivors in all efforts, and prevent future instances of domestic violence.
How to participate:
-
Educate Yourself and Others:Learn about the signs of domestic violence and how it affects people of all backgrounds.
-
Listen and Uplift Survivors:Show solidarity and support for survivors’ stories and needs.
-
Wear Purple:October is also known for #PurpleThursday on the third Thursday of the month, an event where people wear purple to honor survivors.
-
Connect with Organizations:Many organizations, like The National Domestic Violence Hotline at TheHotline.org, offer resources, information, and confidential support.
