SUNHEAT’s annual golf tournament, now in its 17th year, is known for being one of the most philanthropic events in the tri-cities. In past years, tournament proceeds have benefited Royal Family Kids Camp, The GRACE Foundation, Tom and Nancy Osborne’s TeamMates Mentoring Program, #NebraskaStrong flood relief, individuals in need and many others.

This year’s donee, EPIC Children’s Museum and Discovery Center, a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math)-based children’s museum in Grand Island is ecstatic to be chosen to receive the funds. In addition to proceeds generated from one of the most event-filled golf tournaments in the Midwest, the EDC will be matching SUNHEAT’s donation, dollar for dollar.

The SUNHEAT Open is an 18-hole four-person golf tournament. A few of the side games played in the past have been dunk Mrs. Nebraska, golf pong, polish horseshoes and a putting challenge featuring the loop-the-Ioop from Ande’s Isle of Fun from our beloved Skate Island.

A new attraction that has golfers ready to test their skills for 2024 is the Axe Throwing Competition. Winner(s) of the games will receive gift certificates and/or other prizes.

The event is planned for Friday, Aug 2, at the Centura Hills Golf Club in Cairo, with registration at noon and tee-off at 1 p.m. The cost for this event is $400/team. Entry fees include 18 holes of golf, a seat in a cart, dinner, a “special drink” coupon and a chance for one of many flag prizes and raffle items. There will be an awards presentation, raffle drawing and dinner directly after golf outside of the clubhouse.

Anticipation for the event builds according to Josh Rookstool, president of the family-owned and operated business. “Year over year, I start getting requests to sign up as soon as folks knock the dust off their clubs.” he said. “I feel truly blessed for the support shown towards the SUNHEAT Open… in exchange for supporting the event with gift cards and coupons, we do all we can to help direct golfers to frequent the fine establishments that fuel our cause.”

Last year with the help of sponsors, golfers and staff, SUNHEAT International raised over $9,600 in funding and donations for Start Over Rover, a local no-kill animal shelter.

For those who want to help support Epic Children’s Museum but can’t participate in the event, donations can be dropped off from 8 to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at 3720 Arch Ave in Grand Island.
