Multiple fire departments respond to hay pile fire east of Hazard

HAZARD — Multiple fire departments responded to a hay pile fire that took place east of Hazard during the afternoon hours of Thursday, March 7.

Around 1:37 p.m., the Ravenna Volunteer Fire Department received a page for mutual aid regarding a hay pile fire east of Hazard at 47299 777th Road.

A deputy with the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office said the Ravena, Loup City, Hazard, Litchfield and Pleasanton fire departments had all responded to the scene to help with the fire.

Winds were blowing out of the north at 24 mph and caused the visibility to drop to zero on 777th Road, which was briefly closed by the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office.

Local businesses had also responded to provide water for the fire departments.

By 2:30 p.m., the fire had been mostly contained, there had been hotspots near the road that had been stomped out and contained.

Firefighters continued to keep a steady supply of water on the pile as it smoldered in the wind.
