HASTINGS – The Hastings College women’s basketball team could not overcome the slow start in its 73-59 loss to Graceland on Saturday afternoon inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
If it could have gone wrong for Hastings, it did as the Lady Broncos sat with just two points in the first quarter until Riley Clavel hit a three to make it 12-5 with 2:06 to go in the quarter. But that didn’t slow the Yellow Jackets as they carried a 20-9 lead into the second quarter.
The lead did grow to 12 points in the second quarter but HC began to chip away at that lead as Clavel would drain another three and two free throws as GU led 30-24 with 3:18 to go in the half. Both teams scored one more time as HC trailed by six at the break.
Midway through the third quarter, Clavel hit another three as Hastings trailed by just two at 41-39 but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way and would lose by 14.
The Lady Broncos finished the game shooting just 34.4 percent (21-for-61) and just 29 percent (7-for-24) from behind the arc. GU shot 46.4 percent (26-for-56) and were 8-for-15 from downtown. HC did edged the Yellow Jackets in rebounding 37-to-34 while turnovers were even at 15 a piece.
Hastings is now 2-1 on the year and will be back in action Monday Nov. 6 and will play in an exhibition game against Northern Colorado with tipoff set for 6:30 pm inside the Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley, CO.
