KEARNEY FOOTBALL WINS OVER NORTH PLATTE:
The Bearcat defense stiffened on their goal line in back-to-back situations in the first half, pouncing on opportunities for turnovers as Kearney won their fifth game in a row on the season and extending their winning streak over North Platte with a 24-6 victory on Friday night.
Treyven Beckman hit Karter Lee and Zander Reuling for touchdown tosses in the first half, and started the third quarter with a 71 yard touchdown catch and run to Lee at the start of the third.
Kearney sits at 5-0 as they battle 4-1 Grand Island in an epic showdown of Central Nebraska rivals next week at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium.
UNK FOOTBALL BEGINS HOMESTAND WITH FORMER COACH:
The 25th/21st-ranked Nebraska Kearney football team starts a rare two-game home stand when Central Missouri comes to Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field this Saturday. The game kicks off at 1 p.m.
This will be the 13th all-time meeting between the Lopers and Mules (0-3). UCM holds a 9-3 series advantage and is 5-1 all-time in Kearney. UNK’s lone home win in the series came back in 1973.
Last year in Warrensburg, quarterback TJ Davis (Colorado Springs) scored with 22 seconds left, capping a 70-yard drive, to help the Lopers post a 31-28 victory. Davis was limited to 45 rushing yards on 21 carries; he had 43 yards on 23 attempts in a 2019 home loss to UCM.
The Mules have a strong defense as they gave up just 21 points in the opener at No. 14/#6 Pittsburg State and 24 last week at No. 2/3 Northwest Missouri State. Central Missouri also has had the toughest schedule to date as its first four opponents are currently a combined 10-1 and all nationally ranked.
Former Loper head coach Josh Lamberson makes his return to Foster Field after leading the Lopers from 2014-2016 and a 1-21 overall mark.
UNK VOLLEYBALL NEEDS FOUR SETS TO DOWN MISSOURI WESTERN:
Middle Fallon Stutheit had a career-high 18 kills and seventh-ranked Nebraska Kearney out hit Missouri Western State by 87 points to win in four sets Friday night in St. Joseph, Mo.
The Lopers (14-1, 4-1) stave off the upset bid by the Griffons (3-9, 0-4) and now face 17th-ranked Central Missouri today at 2 p.m. The Jennies (9-4, 4-0) downed Fort Hays State in four sets tonight in Warrensburg.
HUSKER VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS SPARTANS’ FOR COOK’S 800th WIN:
The No. 3 Nebraska volleyball team opened up Big Ten Conference play with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-23 sweep of Michigan State in front of 8,282 fans on Friday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
With the Nebraska victory, head coach John Cook celebrated his 800th career win. He became the 19th coach in NCAA Division I Volleyball history to reach 800 career wins and sixth active coach to do so.
The Huskers (9-1) trailed just twice in the match, falling behind early in the first and third sets. It marked their eighth sweep on the season, and their 13th straight win over the Spartans.
The Huskers host No. 7 Ohio State on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Devaney Center. Pregame begins at 6:30 PM tonight on KGFW.
HAIBY TO MISS SEASON FOR HUSKERS:
Nebraska guard Sam Haiby will miss the 2022-23 women’s basketball season with a leg injury, Head Coach Amy Williams announced on Friday, Sept. 23.
A two-time All-Big Ten selection on and off the court, Haiby is the only Husker women’s basketball player in history to achieve the combined career milestones of 1,000 points (1,381), 500 rebounds (532) and 400 assists (414). She currently ranks No. 8 at Nebraska in career assists and No. 15 in career points.
A four-time letter winner and two-time team captain who has played 117 games over the past four seasons, Haiby was a second-team All-Big Ten choice as a junior in 2020-21 when she averaged 16.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.
Last season, playing alongside fellow All-Big Ten honorees Jaz Shelley, Alexis Markowski and Isabelle Bourne, Haiby helped the Huskers to the NCAA Tournament by averaging 11.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists on her way to honorable-mention all-conference accolades.
STORM COMPLETE FALL CLASSIC SWEEP:
The Tri-City Storm completed a two-game sweep at the 2022 DICK’S Sporting Goods Fall Classic Friday night in a 6-4 victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
The Storm defeated the Madison Capitols by a final score of 4-1 on Thursday night to post a perfect 2-0-0-0 record in the event.
Haden Kruse, David Sacco, Cale Ashcroft, Trevor Connelly, Graham Gamache, and Tanner Adams each notched goals in the game for the Storm.
Tri-City hits the ice again on Friday, September 30th, in a home game against the Omaha Lancers. Puck drop for the game is set for 7:05pm CT.
