Back in the 1980s, Late Night with David Letterman came on the air after Johnny Carson which by my dad’s standards was way too late to be watchin’ television and just as Carson was ending and my brother and I would begin to get excited at the prospect of being able to watch Letterman, those words that still make my teeth clench to this day would be spoken like clockwork, “Alright, let’s hit it…” meaning it was time to go to bed: off went the tube!!! Disappointment and curse words bounced around inside my head.
Thanks to my brother, the other, smarter Franzman, a VCR was set up and programmed to record Letterman every night of the week allowing us to watch each episode on a bright and sunny Saturday late morning. SPECTACULAR memory. David was different, edgier and unique. Johnny Carson was perfect and I don’t think anyone was looking for nor did we need anything else but David Letterman had an undeniably different approach to his show. We loved it for years and before we knew it (and in what seemed like the blink of an eye) there were so many (too many) late night talk shows to care about. I checked out.
Read the following article. David will return to Late Night for an appearance regarding his 40th Anniversary. Oh, the good ol’ days….
