GRAND ISLAND – The 29th annual Easter Basket Extravaganza on April 12 raised money for Project Hunger.
The total amount of money raised won’t be known for about a week, said Doug Winder with Project Hunger.
The event occurred at the First Presbyterian Church from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 12. Tables lined the church’s fellowship hall and were filled with baskets.
Proceeds from the event benefit Hope Harbor, the Salvation Army, Food for Thought, the Centura Backpack Program, and the Doniphan-Trumbull Food Bank, said Jeff Williams, vice president of Project Hunger.
Prospective buyers had two options to purchase a basket. A “buy it now” option at a set price was one option. Or people could bid online for the baskets. Williams said there were approximately 419 baskets that were donated by various businesses, organizations, and individuals.
Project Hunger was founded in 1990, Williams said.
This is not the only event for Project Hunger. At the Hall County Fair, there will be a can sculpture to benefit food banks. At Thanksgiving, Project Hunger distributes holiday meal baskets at Fonner Park filled with food items purchased by Project Hunnger and distributed to families with food insecurity.
Project Hunger has 25 members, Williams said. He wanted to thank all donors for Project Hunger and the First Presbyterian Church for providing the space at no charge.
