GRAND ISLAND – A South Dakota man accused of shooting a man and then hitting him in the back of the head with a baseball bat received sentences on two counts July 30.

Logan C. Hunts Horse, 21, of Wounded Knee, S.D., was sentenced by District Court Judge Patrick Lee to 64 to 94 years in prison for second-degree murder and to 24-40 years in prison for using a deadly weapon to commit a felony.

The sentences are to be served consecutively. Hunts Horse received credit for 510 days served.

Hunts Horse was convicted of killing Todd Scherer on March 9, 2023, at Fonner Park. When Grand Island police officers arrived at the scene, they located Scherer inside of his tack room within the R Barn.

Scherer had a single bullet wound to his stomach and a large laceration to the back of his head.

According to a Police Department probably cause statement, Hunts Horse; Austin Kelly, 17, 2425 Park Drive, and another man left the building after Scherer was shot and went to the South Locust Walmart. After they returned to the barn, Hunts Horse got a wood baseball bat from his room, went to Scherer’s room, and struck Scherer, who was still alive. Kelly took Scherer’s wallet from his pants pocket, and the wallet contained cash.

Scherer had told the other men that Scherer came to their room and “was asking about sexual favors with the males which made them uncomfortable.”

After getting the wallet, Hunts Horse and Kelly left the barn with the wallet and the money, which was divided among three people.
