David Bowie would have turned 77, (Monday, Jan. 8th), and to mark the occasion, Parlophone Records will release a limited-edition vinyl album, Waiting in the Sky (Before the Starman Came to Earth), on April 20th, Record Store Day.
The album’s 11 tracks were taken from the Trident Studios quarter-inch stereo tapes dated December 15th, 1971. It was created for the then provisional tracklisting for what would become The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars album. But the tracklist for this new album is different than the Ziggy album and contains four songs that didn’t make the final album.
On side one, in place of “Starman,” is a cover of Chuck Berry‘s “Round and Round,” one of the last three tracks recorded for the album in February 1972. It was released as the B-side to “Drive-in Saturday” in April 1973. And, initially closing side one of the album was Bowie’s version of Jacques Brel’s “Amsterdam,” which would later appear as the B-side of “Sorrow” in October 1973.
Side two contains two non-LP tracks, “Holy Holy,” a re-recording with The Spiders of his 1971 single, which wasn’t released until June 1974, and “Velvet Goldmine,” which was not released until September 1975.
