KEARNEY — A storm system moving out of the southwest will bring a chance for accumulating snowfall to the area late Thursday into Friday, according to the National Weather Service – Hastings.

Looking at the situation on Tuesday, split upper-level flow remains across the center of the United States. Models are hinting at the potential for fog overnight into Wednesday morning.

The focus for the week is the developing storm system that could bring a 50-60 percent chance of precipitation on late Thursday.

The NWS Hastings coverage area is on the northern edge of this system and the focus is primarily south of Interstate 80. Some models indicate one to three inches of snowfall across north central Kansas and lesser amounts farther north.

Along with the snowfall, the system will usher in progressively cooler temperatures are expected toward the end of the forecast period.

Another storm system looks to be downstream and looks to be stronger than the prior one. It could potentially impact the area as Sunday afternoon and linger into Monday.

“Still, plenty of uncertainty in the track and timing of this system among the global models, but again, ensembles are indicating a fairly good shot of widespread accumulating snowfall totals across the local area, most members two or more inches,” NWS Hastings stated in a forecast discussion.

Winds also look to increase Monday into Tuesday, which means blowing snow could become an issue if they trend stronger.
