Hastings, NE – The Hastings College men’s soccer team just can’t find its first win of 2023 falling to MidAmerica Nazarene 4-2 on Saturday evening.
The Broncos were able to strike first as a loose ball found the feet of Ayo Makinde as he ripped a shot into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
The Pioneers countered in the 15th minute with a goal from Nicolas Bevacqua to even the match. The game would remain 1-1 at the break.
Then things began to get out of control following a Rick Hovinga penalty kick goal in the 50th minute. Yellow cards were apparently in style during this game as 12 yellow cards were shown during this contest plus a straight red that put Hastings down a man.
After going down 3-1, there was a hand ball in the box allowing Joe Vokins to score from the spot to make it 3-2 but Hastings returned the favor in the 86th minute where Hovinga scored his second from the spot to make it 4-2 as that is how this one ended.
Both teams finished the game with 14 shots but MNU led the way with 11 shots on goal to just five for the Broncos.
Hastings falls to 0-4-1 on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Sept. 13 hitting the road to take on Graceland with kickoff set for 5:00 pm in Lamoni, IA.
