Back in fourth grade at Jefferson Elementary in Grand Island, I was this little nerdy girl with thick lenses and afraid of my own shadow. However, like most kids back then, we had an after school program to watch called “Cartoon Corral with Kalamity Kate” aka Leta Powell Drake. It was our daily after school escape and something we all watched. At some point they had a game show on this program called, “The Whiz Kidz” and out of our big class, I was chosen, along with Todd Keller and Rick Pfeifer to compete against another school for playground equipment for our school. How cool is that?!
My mom bought me a cool one piece light blue jump suit and then the day happened. We went to Kalamity Kate’s place and answered these questions… I believe all of mine were correct and our school did win! We were heroes! Todd, Rick and I were the smarties. Yayy!
Reading this biography on Leta Powell Drake is a great part of television history and maybe a bit of the reason I chose to go into broadcasting. I wasn’t scared and I had fun! Read the book if you have the chance. It’s a fantastic book. Thanks for the memories, Kalamity Kate!
