COVID: What to Know About the BA.5 Variant
The latest Omicron variant, BA.5, is fueling a surge in COVID cases worldwide. Here’s what you need to know about it.
It’s extremely virulent. Experts haven’t yet pinned down stats yet, but this latest variant seems to spread even more rapidly than previous Omicron variants did.
It’s good at evading immunity. BA.5 has a protein-spike variation that allows it to slip past antibodies, both from vaccines and previous COVID infections. But a pre-print study suggests that a previous Omicron infection does provide protection for up to six months.
It doesn’t seem more dangerous. Although infections are once again skyrocketing, ICU admissions and deaths have remained relatively steady. Hospitalizations are on the rise, but that’s likely just because of the sheer number of infections.
Re-infections are milder. If you’ve already had COVID, you very well may get infected with BA.5 — but another pre-print study says 97% of re-infected people stay out of the hospital.
Consider masking up again. If you’re going to be in a crowded indoor space, a tight-fitting KN95 can help keep you from getting sick.
Better shots are on the way. Both Moderna and Pfizer are working on new formulations of their mRNA vaccines to target Omicron. They will likely be available in October or November.
You should get a booster now, if you can. People 50 and over and the immunocompromised are eligible for a fourth mRNA shot, as long as it’s been at least four months since your third. Health officials say you’ll still be able to get the Omicron-specific booster come fall even if you get a booster now, and the current booster will protect against severe illness.
Experts say that this variant could be the biggest yet, so they urge you to take all the steps you can to keep from getting severely ill. (ABC News, NBC News)
