I cannot imagine a part of my childhood that didn’t have my brother, my cousins, classmates and friends going to Skate Island in Grand Island. It was where we learned the Hokey Pokey and how to skate! Trust me, we witnessed our fair share of wicked falls and broken bones, but that never stopped us.
The music was loud and the disco lights or strobe lights kept us in the “groove” and having a blast. I had a few birthday party’s there, too. Let me say that if you had a party at Skate Island, you were one lucky kid and considered cool.
I am so sad to see this icon leave us. So many fun memories. We were all fortunate to have this establishment in our lives for the many years Skate Island was in business.
