Two former Husker defensive linemen, the Davis Brothers, were taken on the final day of the NFL Draft Saturday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took Khalil Davis in the 6th round with the 194th overall pick. His twin brother, Carlos Davis, was drafted by the Steelers with the 232nd overall pick in the 7th round. The 6th round selection of Khalil Davis snapped the Huskers 14 round NFL Draft drought. The Jacksonville Jaguars took QB Tanner Lee with the 203 overall pick in the 6th round in 2018.
Several former Huskers have signed NFL free agent deals. Cornerback Lamar Jackson signed with the New York Jets. Defensive tackle Darrion Daniels inked a deal with the 49ers.
Former UNK defensive end Hinwa Allieu is getting a shot with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. He’s the 12th Loper since 2000 to receive a tryout or sign an undrafted free agent deal with an NFL team. Linebacker Tyke Kozeal was the most recent, spending time with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017. 
Husker walk-on defensive back Ethan Cox has entered his name into the transfer portal. A 2017 recruit out of Blair, Cox played in 11 games on special teams in 2018. He was slowed by injuries in 2019 and saw no game action.
The Husker Football team is still in the running for one of the best players in Kansas City. Three star wide receiver Jaylin Noel of Park Hill High School, tweeted that he’s narrowed his list to Nebraska and Iowa State. He is scheduled to take official visits to both schools in June if permitted. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Noel is regarded as the No. 11 prospect in Missouri in the 2021 recruiting class.
The University of Nebraska intends to hold in-person classes on all of its campuses in the fall according to NU President Ted Carter. The University system is taking into consideration the possibility of continued coronavirus restrictions. Carter said the return of college sports and other extracurricular activities will eventually be put into NU’s plans, but those guidelines will likely come from the NCAA and athletic conference’s.
The 31st running of the $50,000 Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes will take place Wednesday at Fonner Park. A full field of 10 horses will be at the post. The 1 and 1/16-mile event will be the eighth race on the nine-race card and go off at approximately 7:20 p.m. Go to Fonnerpark.com for more.
