Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, Joe Burrow, was the first overall pick on day one of the NFL Draft last night. The Ohio native was drafted by the Cinncinati Bengals. Burrow was followed by the first of four Ohio State Buckeyes to go in the first round. The Washington Redskins took defense end Chase Young with the second overall pick, Detroit followed with defensive back Jeff Okudah. Burrow was the first of four QB’s taken on day one of the draft. The Dolphins took Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa with fifth overall pick, the LA Chargers took Oregon’s Justin Herbert at number six. The Green Bay Packers traded up to draft Utah State quarterback Jordan Love with the 26th pick. 14 of the first round picks came from the SEC, the National Champions LSU had five. Rounds two and three of the draft are tonight, the final four rounds takes place tomorrow. Cornerback Lamar Jackson is expected to hear his name first among former Huskers in this years NFL Draft. The Sporting News and CBS Sports have projected Jackson as a third round pick, while USA Today has him going in the fourth round. Nebraska hasn’t had a first round pick in the NFL draft in almost a decade and the Huskers have only seen four players drafted in the first round since the turn of the century. The most recent first round pick is cornerback Prince Amukamara, drafted 19th overall by the New York Giants. The year before that, Ndamukong Suh was selected second overall by the Detroit Lions after one of the most dominant defensive seasons in college football history. Cornerback Fabian Washington (23rd overall in 2005) and defensive tackle Adam Carriker (13th overall in 2007) are the only other first-round picks since 2000. However, Nebraska did have eight first round picks apiece in the 1990s, the 1980s and the 1970s plus three apiece in the 1960s and 1930s. Overall, 33 Huskers have been selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. The first was Sam Francis, a running back taken with the first overall pick in the 1937 draft. Francis is one of two Huskers taken with the first overall pick. The second was wide receiver Irving Fryar in 1984. No Husker was drafted last season, ending a 56 year streak of having at least one player taken in the draft.
